Why we built OmniAudio

30 Jan 2025

Today’s afternoon bike ride was particularly memorable. I finished three pieces I’d been meaning to read but never found the time for — an intriguing blog post from a friend in Chinese, an in-depth analysis I’d bookmarked ages ago, and a trending tech review. As I pedaled along, these pieces effortlessly flowed through my earphones, transforming a simple exercise session into an enriching experience.

This encapsulates why we built OmniAudio.

One month in: a humble beginning

OmniAudio has been live for a month now. While our user base is still modest, every piece of feedback warms our hearts. We’re particularly grateful to those early supporters who believed in us enough to become paying customers — your trust fuels our journey forward.

Expanding what’s possible to hear

Before OmniAudio, our team was made up of passionate podcast enthusiasts. We often faced a common frustration: great podcasts always seemed to run out too quickly. Sometimes we’d come across fascinating articles and think, “If only I could listen to this instead.”

Initially, we aimed to create a YouTube-to-podcast conversion service. When copyright issues made that unfeasible, we had a realization: why not empower everyone to transform any content they want to consume into podcast format?

Think about all those moments — cycling, commuting, doing household chores — when your eyes are busy but your ears are free. While listening might not be the most efficient way to consume content, it’s perfect for these occasions. And with AI’s capabilities, we can even make content in any language accessible in your native tongue — breaking down language barriers that often limit our access to knowledge.

Beyond simple text-to-speech

“Isn’t this just another text-to-speech tool?” That’s often the first reaction we get. But anyone who’s used standard TTS services knows how mechanical and jarring they can be after extended listening.

Yes, TTS technology has made remarkable progress. However, most content isn’t written for audio consumption, and direct conversion often feels unnatural. Thanks to AI advancements, we can now bridge this gap. No matter how unstructured or messy the input content is, our AI can identify core ideas and restructure them into smooth, listenable content. It acts like a thoughtful editor, not just making text sound more natural, but also reorganizing fragmented content into coherent narratives.

Coexisting with human podcasts

Let’s be clear: OmniAudio will never attempt to replace human-created podcasts. The passion, thoughtfulness, and authentic emotions in carefully crafted podcast shows are irreplaceable elements that AI simply cannot replicate.

We don’t believe in AI-generated podcasts created from scratch. Instead, we see AI as a content facilitator, breaking down barriers between written and audio formats, making valuable content more accessible through sound.

Keeping it simple, focusing on sustainability

In an era of endless AI applications, we chose to do one thing and do it well. OmniAudio maintains a minimalist design, serving as a bridge between content and audio. We’re transparent about this approach — our commitment to simplicity isn’t just about user experience; it’s also about maintaining sustainable operational costs. In a world obsessed with rapid scaling, we prefer steady growth, building a tool that can stand the test of time.

Looking ahead

As we move forward, we have several initiatives planned:

  1. Opening up free user quotas, once we’ve optimized our current services
  2. Adding mobile podcast creation capabilities
  3. Expanding our content conversion options to include PDFs, newsletters, RSS feeds, and more. We see countless possibilities here — any content worth hearing deserves a path to audio format. The potential is truly exciting, so stay tuned

We believe great tools should seamlessly integrate into your life, accompanying you during your morning runs, commutes, or household chores, letting interesting thoughts and perspectives naturally flow into your day. That’s what we’re striving for — making audio the most natural bridge between you and content.
